What types of cables and connectors are there?

A charging cable has a contact point (plug / connector) both on the vehicle side and on the charger’s side. The speed of the charging process depends on the charging point and the capabilities of the vehicle.

Two different types of plugs and sockets have been developed to charge an electric car. At this moment the Japanese and (most) American brands have a Type 1 socket and all European brands a Type 2 socket. In Europe, the so-called Type 2 socket is the official standard, which is why all (public) charging posts are equipped with this type of socket.
